Welcome from Malcolm Cree CBE, the Chief Executive of the Bar Council

Malcolm Cree

Dear Candidate,

I am delighted that you are interested in the role of Special Adviser to the Chair of the Bar Council.  This is a rare opportunity to take on a fascinating policy and representation role in support of the Bar Council’s strategic objectives.

The Bar Council represents some 16,500 practising barristers in England and Wales.  Our mission is to champion: the rule of law and fair access to justice; the Bar’s high-quality specialist advocacy and advisory services; the highest standards of conduct, skills, and ethics; equality and diversity across the profession; and the development of business opportunities for barristers at home and abroad.

Our current priority is to continue raising awareness of the present failings in the justice system, particularly the criminal justice system, by gathering evidence, holding events, lobbying government, and boosting the media profile of such issues.

The full-time Chair of the Bar, a senior practising barrister, is elected and occupies the role for a year, having usually spent the previous year as Vice-Chair. The Chair represents the profession nationally and internationally, working closely with the senior executive team, Bar Council members, the Circuits and the Specialist Bar Associations (SBAs) as well as the many Bar Council committees.  He or she seeks to influence and educate ministers, senior officials and parliamentarians. Alongside the Chief Executive, the Special Adviser has a key role in supporting and advising the Chair during his or her tenure, often acting independently on the Chair’s behalf.  The Special Advisor will therefore need to have outstanding relationship skills, an ability to build confidential networks, and an understanding of how to influence both parliament and government.

For a confidential conversation with Thewlis Graham Associates who are managing the process, please contact Sarah Thewlis, Managing Director on 0207 850 4781 or email applications@thewlisgraham.com.  Sarah will be happy to discuss this opportunity with you and answer any questions you may have.

Yours sincerely
