Welcome from Alick Simmons, Chair of UFAW and HSA

Alick Simmonds

Thank you taking an interest in this joint position. This is an important role and we are keen to attract candidates with the right experience, attributes and qualifications.  I hope you will find useful the information both in this Candidate Brief and more generally on both our websites.

UFAW was established in 1926 and is now internationally recognised as the key independent scientific and educational animal welfare charity. It promotes high standards of welfare for farm, companion, laboratory and captive animals.  More information about the charity and its activities is provided at

The HSA, founded in 1911, is the only UK charity concerned exclusively with promoting the humane treatment of food animals worldwide in markets, during transport, at slaughter, and when killed for welfare reasons or during disease control. It fulfils its mission through research, education, advice, training and technical advances. More information about the charity and its activities is provided at

Since 1988 the members of the UFAW Council have also been the members of the HSA's board of trustees.

We are now looking to appoint our next Chief Executive and Scientific Director to build on the excellent work of the current Chief Executive and Scientific Director, Dr Robert Hubrecht OBE, who after many years is retiring. Working in partnership with the Board and a talented and committed team of staff based in Wheathampstead (Hertfordshire), his replacement will ensure that the work of both organisations continues to flourish and develop both in the UK and internationally, with science at the core of all that is done.

UFAW is part way through the delivery of its ten-year strategy ( and the Board are looking for someone with the vision and energy to take both organisations to the next phase of their development.

If you are interested in the work of UFAW and HSA and have experience relevant to this significant role, we would very much like to hear from you. Please contact our recruitment partner, Sarah Thewlis, at Thewlis Graham Associates on 020 7850 4781 to discuss the opportunity in more detail.

Yours sincerely,
