We are very pleased to announce that Ed Hughes has been appointed the next CEO of the Council of Deans of Health.

Ed joins us on 1 July 2023 from Research England, where he is Director of Insight and Engagement. He leads on engagement with the higher education sector and other stakeholders, building insight and knowledge to inform Research England’s policy and funding interventions.

Before that, he spent over 15 years at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and at the Office for Students (OfS), most recently as Head of Health and Medicine at both HEFCE and the OfS. He led HEFCE’s work alongside Health Education England on the expansion of medical schools, and the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines programme which aimed to increase awareness of Allied Health Professions and develop a better understanding of student recruitment and retention patterns for nursing, midwifery and allied health courses.

Ed said, “I am delighted to have been appointed the new CEO of the Council of Deans of Health and to have the opportunity to serve members at this crucial time for the sector. It is a privilege to represent members working in education and research for the healthcare professions across the four nations of the UK. I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor, Dr Katerina Kolyva, who did so much to get the Council to where it is today.  I’m excited to be leading the organisation as it continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of members and the communities they serve.”

Professor Brian Webster-Henderson, Chair of the Council of Deans of Health said, “I am glad to confirm the appointment of Ed Hughes as the next CEO for the Council of Deans of Health. Ed brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his current work at Research England and previously at the Office for Students. I know you will join me in welcoming him to the role and in looking forward to what his leadership brings”.

We look forward to welcoming Ed to the Council in July.
